Nigeria is "at war" with Boko Haram - Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka
by Diwanz Almn III, Living A Journey.
LAGOS (Reuters) - Nigeria is "at war" with Islamist sect Boko Haram and should not negotiate with its leaders who are "mass murderers", Nigerian Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka said on Friday.
President Goodluck Jonathan said earlier this year his government was open to dialogue with the sect, whose insurgency has killed an estimated 2,800 people since 2009.
The sect is styled on the Afghan Taliban and while it usually targets security and government officials, it has also struck churches, mosques and universities, becoming the biggest security threat in Africa's top oil producer.
"Don't talk to mass murderers. You are not obliged to talk to those who made the killing of innocent people their philosophy," Soyinka told reporters at a conference in Lagos.
"This is a security issue. It becomes a question of who goes down: is it the community? Is it society? is it the nation? Or is it a bunch of killers who are totally beyond control?"
Soyinka, 78, who sports a distinctive white Afro hairstyle, is a playwright and one of Africa's leading intellectuals. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986.
He said the violence in the north of Nigeria was the fault of religious "extremists" who had "brainwashed" youths who were now out of control. He also blamed the government for "abysmal" leadership, which he said had left vulnerable youths in poverty.
A purported spokesman for Boko Haram told reporters in the sect's stronghold in Maiduguri, in the northeast, it would be willing to talk if its members were released from prison and other conditions were met.
But the sect's leader Abubakar Shekau has said he won't talk with the government, saying he wants to impose sharia, Islamic law, on the country of 160 million people, around half of whom are Christians and the other half Muslim.
Rights groups have said the military committed human rights violations during their campaign against Boko Haram, including executing unarmed people on the street and torturing suspects.
"The military has never had to cope with this kind of insurgency and so the military is making a lot of blunders," Soyinka said. "There have been incidents of the violation of fundamental human rights, absolutely."
"We are at war and a lot of horrible things happen."
Soyinka has been an outspoken critic of governments in Nigeria and elsewhere. He was arrested during Nigeria's civil war in 1967 and spent two years in solitary confinement.

Photography News Update: Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD Lens
by Diwanz Almn III, Living A Journey
A continuous manual focus mechanism provides precise manual focus, especially important with this lens' 1:1 macro capability. And an Internal Focusing system means the front lens elements do not rotate and the lens does not change length when focusing, also important for macro shooting. In addition to macro capability, this 90mm lens is also considered to be an ideal lens for portraiture.
Two extra-low dispersion elements and one low dispersion element reduce chromatic aberration and make for sharp, high resolution images. Newly developed eBAND hybrid lens coating combines conventional multi-coating with a layer of nano-structured coating for particularly uniform light transmission and minimal reflection. This reduces flares and ghosting in your images.
An extra large and ridged focus ring and moisture resistant construction give muscle to this optically impressive lens.
Vibration Compensation
VC (Vibration Compensation) is Tamron's proprietary image stabilization mechanism which reduces the effects of camera shake to deliver sharp images in low light and at slower shutter speeds. It is a newly developed three coil system that employs a lighter moving coil mechanism which contributes to its improved performance and overall compact design.
Ultrasonic Motor
USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) Motor is the power for a fast and quiet autofocus drive that works in harmony with continuous manual focus mechanism.
Internal Focusing
The IF (Internal Focus) system focuses by moving only the internal lens group, rather than the front lens elements- therefore, the overall length of the lens does not change when focusing.
Macro Function
1:1 maximum reproduction ratio and 11.8" (0.3 m) minimum focusing distance provide sharp close-up performance.
The Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD lenses which includes Canon, Nikon and Sony camera mounts can be purchased on the B&H Photo Video web site, at the SuperStore, or by calling 800-606-6969.

Oscars Attention For Skyfall?
by Diwanz Almn III, Living A Journey.
Deadline claims that an Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences screening of the movie - which is currently ruling the box office charts on both sides of the Atlantic - saw massive crowds this week.
And the movie site's Pete Hammond reckons there was serious talk among members of the 23rd Bond film being the "best ever" - and of nominations for Best Picture and also possibly for certain members of the supporting cast.
Hammond wrote: "It is the first I can recall getting truly serious Oscar talk, not only for Best Picture but even in acting categories for supporting players Javier Bardem as the villainous Silva and Judi Dench with a particularly meaty turn as M this time around."
And he quoted the movie's sound mixer Greg P Russell as saying: "Generally as Academy members we are dealing with art films or indie films but the big popular movie that has critical acclaim too makes a lot of sense for Best Picture. I would love to see a more popular film get in and I think Skyfall fits into that as well."
The James Bond franchise has only won two Oscars in the previous 50 years: Best Sound Effects for Goldfinger and Best Visual Effects for Thunderball.

Najib: Malaysia translates Hijrah concept into nation’s transformation
by Diwanz Almn III, Living A Journey.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Hijrah concept has been translated into tangible efforts in effecting the national transformation to propel Malaysia to greater heights.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said, upholding the definition of hijrah, which means migration or change, Malaysia had brought about transformation to a level that had won it international recognition and praises as a dynamic and progressive Islamic nation.
Najib said this in his Maal Hijrah (Islamic new year) message on his www.1Malaysia.com.my blog Wednesday.
While expressing gratitude that Malaysia would be able to celebrate Maal Hijrah 1434 (which falls Thursday) amid the spirit of moderation and people's prosperity, Najib said this was in line with the Maal Hijrah theme this time, which was, "Wasatiyyah Tonggak Kesatuan Ummah" (Moderation the Pillar of Unity of the Ummah).
He said transformation was part of the mission for godliness, and a divine command that must be obeyed all the time. "We must always do transformation in order to have a better life in this world and the hereafter...must always strive to do better and hope for blessings from Allah," he said, referring to verse 218 of the Surah (chapter) Al-Baqarah which touches on the link between hijrah and receiving divine blessings.
Najib said if Islamic rulings were comprehensively practised, it would bring the ummah together, resulting in unity and capable leadership that could remove racial, language and colour barriers.
He said Malaysia had generated the thinking that solidarity and unity could be pillared by the wasatiyyah (moderation) approach, which had been incorporated in all matters for balanced spiritual and physical development in the country.
"Indeed through the wasatiyyah approach, unity and race and religious relations can be improved," said Najib, adding that the concept could also raise the value of unity in diversity.
He said the concept of moderation had also been promoted by Malaysia in resolving internal and external conflicts.
For instance, he said, the Malaysian government, acting as mediator, had used the moderation approach in peace negotiations between the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and the Philippine government, bringing to an end 40 years of armed conflict between the two sides, recently.
"We have also been using the same approach in the issue of ethnic and religious violence in the Rakhine state of Myanmar, while focusing on humanitarian aid for the victims regardless of their background and religion," he said.
Najib said recently too, world-renowned ulama Dr Yusuf Al-Qaradawi praised Malaysia for its unwavering commitment to helping and supporting Palestinians who were being oppressed by Israel's zionist regime.
In ending the message, Najib and his family wished all Muslims in Malaysia a happy Maal Hijrah 1434 celebration. - Bernama
